In Radio Mara Mara, Masa the DJ plays tracks for a fleeing populace. If you were running to the border, what song would def be on your playlist, and why?

Kaylin
Not, “It’s a Small World Afterall.” Hmm… Well if I were really living it, I’d probably need something fast to motivate me to keep going, and something happy to distract me, so I’d stick the the Beatles. However, if I were watching my life like a movie, I’d really wanna feel the heartache. Maybe, “I’m Kissing You,” you know, from the ’90s R&J with Claire’n’Leo. And “Pagan Poetry” by Bjork…I always feel a lot of rage and sadness when I listen to that.

E.G. and Leoni live exiled from Mara Mara and the Leunsa Valley for over a decade, all the while missing the sweet sweet fruit of the Grundub Tree. If you were exiled from New York, what’s the one food you would most miss?

Kaylin
Well I do feel exiled from countries that commonly sell passion fruit– it has to be my favorite taste ever, and the only time you can ever find it in NYC, it’s at Eataly, and costs $3 for one tiny fruit. I’m pretty sure even they’ve stopped carrying it. But that’s me whining from a place of glutton and abundance. If I were exiled… and say, only had freeze-dried crackers to eat, I would give anything for garlicky marinara sauce, really good cheeses, and for any Thai dish featuring mock-duck.

The DJ and the Archivist are well aware of the need to pack a kit for any kind of extended journey, either into the Wet Mara Canyons, or running from violence. What’s the one, non-practical thing you would include in your disaster kit?

Kaylin
My brother’s passport. I take it with me every time I leave the country.

If New York were bombed out and war torn, would you stay or would you go?

Kaylin
I was only here for two weeks when 9/11 happened- I was a freshman at NYU. That and it’s aftermath rooted me to this city and I haven’t left. But man, if the whole city were in shambles and I had somewhere better to go, I hope I would have the presence of mind to go.
