li88y inc. is proud to present Radio Mara Mara as part of the 17th annual New York International Fringe Festival – FringeNYC. Radio Mara Mara is written by Libby Emmons, directed by Ali Ayala, and stars Christopher Burris and Zoe Metcalfe-Klaw. It will be presented at the Kraine, 82 East 4th Street, NYC.

In an abandoned radio station in the Mara hills around a bombed out capital city, the DJ (Christopher Burris) plays tunes for a populace that is torn between evacuating the country and fighting it out. The Archivist (Zoe Metcalfe-Klaw) transfers old reel-to-reel audio recordings to digital in an attempt to preserve the country’s history. Audio from the interviews interplay with the DJ’s playlist, as the DJ and the Archivist dig into their country’s past to try to determine their future. Radio Mara Mara is inspired by tales of Somalia’s Radio Mogadishu as well at the Timbuktu tradition of hiding valuable manuscripts within hollow walls. Hand made custom props and a reimagined covers soundtrack by local NYC musicians set the tone. An EP of the soundtrack will be available for download in early August, details can be found at http://www.li88yinc.com

This show features Christopher Burris (performer and director of A Raisin in the Salad: Black Plays for White People, Fringe NYC 2012) and Zoe Metcalfe-Klaw (Pontiac Firebird Variations, Ice Factory Festival). Director Ali Ayala and playwright Libby Emmons are frequent collaborators, who have been working together on blue box world’s Sticky 10-minute play series since 2004. As co-producers, friends, and artistic comrades, Ali and Libby are excited to keep working on Radio Mara Mara, which they’ve been developing since fall 2012.
